Susan O'Neill's much-anticipated solo album Now in a Minute has made a stunning debut, entering at number 1 on the Independent Album Chart and number 4 on the Official Album Chart. This success marks a pivotal moment in O’Neill’s career, further establishing her as one of Ireland’s most compelling singer-songwriters.
Now In A Minute's success relegates Fontaines D.C.'s Romance to No.2 on the Independent Album Chart, ending its reign at No.1. The Independent Chart also features Jamie xx's In Waves debuting at No.3 – followed by Arctic Monkeys' AM at No.4, and Frank Ocean's Blonde at No.5.
On the Irish Albums Chart, meanwhile, Now In A Minute is the only new entry in the Top 5. Susan comes in just behind Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet (No.1), Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (No. 2), and Noah Kahan's Stick Season (No. 3) – and ahead of Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department (No. 5).
Now in a Minute has already garnered rave reviews, with Hot Press awarding it a stellar 9/10 rating, describing it as "the work of an artist at the top of her game" The album has been praised for its evocative and layered sound, showcasing O’Neill’s unique blend of dark indie-folk. According to Hot Press, “'Timeless is a term often thrown around without much consideration of its true meaning. However, Susan O’Neill’s Now In A Minute is just that.”
The Irish Times lauds O’Neill’s latest work with 4 stars highlighting how her seasoned, soulful voice navigates an array of emotions: “vulnerable one minute, assertive the next,” and commending her ability to filter “a heavy agenda through music full of nuance, invention, and charm.” The publication also noted how O'Neill “wastes no emotion, with every song lived and crafted to elicit her truth”
From the enigmatic opener "Apparitions," described as having “the tranquil vibes of Yo La Tengo” (Hot Press), to the life-affirming closer "Give You My All," Now in a Minute offers a journey through themes of love, fidelity, ambition, and the struggles of women in the 21st century. The Irish Times calls it a “seriously impressive” solo effort, with the singer-songwriter not shying away from profound reflections set against an evocative musical backdrop. Rolling Stone simply wrote in their current feature interview with O’Neill that on ‘Now in a Minute’ “Susan sings with great intimacy; it is an album full of close-ups, Like emotional macro photographs”..
Described already by Clash as “Superb” and The Sunday Times as simply “Exquisite” alongside previous nominations for the RTE Radio 1 ‘Best female folk artist’ and the Choice Music Prize, It’s no surprise that O’Neills’ long awaited solo offering has gone straight to the top spot on it’s week of release.
Recorded over the past 18 months between County Clare and Cork, with engineer and producer Christian Best (Mick Flannery, O Emperor). Additional mixing from Irish born, Los Angeles based engineer Cian Riordan (St. Vincent, Lana Del Ray) ) and Canadian engineer Daniel Ledwell (Rachel Sermani, Jenn Grant). Susan collaborated on an array of the songs with musical brothers Cillian and Lorcan Byrne. Joined on several tracks by Killian Browne on Piano and also featuring Alan Comerford on guitar. Long-time collaborator Mick Flannery co-wrote four tracks, further enhancing the album's emotional depth.
Susan is about to embark on a series of tours across the EU and UK in support of her album, with Nth American and Australian tours to be announced soon.
