Mara katria - modern m
Mara Katria’s debut LP, Modern M, is a rare direct collaboration with the foundational new wave band Modern English. The album features Robbie Grey’s timeless vocals backing Mara on several tracks including the lead single “People Turn to Gold.” Michael “Mick” Conroy’s signature bass and textural sonic explorations –– exuberant in pieces like “Snow” –– are unmistakable throughout the ten-song creation. These pair with Mara’s art pop inspired production and performances in a manner that feels authentic, urgent, and cinematic. Modern M likewise spotlights the post punk keyboardist Stephen Walker, whose cosmic synths compliment the potent artistry of guitarist Gary McDowell, setting the stage for this immersive concept album. In addition, Modern English aficionados will note the song “Dancing Dizzy” showcases drums from Roy Martin who has long toured and recorded with the band.
The project is a natural evolution from Mara’s background in filmmaking and score work. Her acclaimed independent documentary Please Talk with Me served as the source material for the 2025 Netflix docuseries True Haunting: Eerie Hall (produced by horror visionary James Wan) replete with a striking 80s soundtrack.
Modern M’s conceptual landscape also benefits in scale and scope from a companion book, Modern M: Music for Time Travelers, that Mara’s written as an essential guide to the record. Her music memoir contains expanded liner notes, illuminating photos, and behind-the-scenes stories about the album’s creation as well as her extraordinary partnership with Modern English. Modern M and the guide-book drop March 13, 2026.
