ELLUR - at home in my mind - dance to the radio
Halifax indie specialist Ellur releases debut LP ‘At Home In My Mind’, out today (February 6th) via cult indie label Dance To The Radio.
An open invite into the world of the enigmatic musician, ‘At Home In My Mind’ is a journey around Ellur’s mind; it dips into different musical genres that have shaped her for the past 25 years – from the 90s indie rock she grew up with, to glitch-pop she discovered in her late teens to the alt-folk she cherishes now. Ellur has created a warm abode for her thoughts and experiences as a young woman growing up in Yorkshire’s Calderdale Valley and ‘At Home In My Mind’ beds them all in, safely together.
Produced by Joel Johnston (Far Caspian) and recorded from his Leeds studio, ‘At Home In My Mind’ expands on themes Ellur draws on in her acclaimed ‘God Help Me Now EP’, particularly an overarching theme of connection. Ellur connecting with her childhood memories, listening to her honest feelings, but most importantly, Ellur wants ‘At Home In My Mind’ to be an arm extended out, looking for people who need a hand to hold.
Having already shared lead singles ‘The World Is Not An Oyster’, ‘Dream Of Mine’ (currently BBC 6 Music-playlisted), ‘The Wheel’ and ‘Missing Kid’, praise continues to reverberate around the press landscape (NME, Rolling Stone, DIY, Consequence of Sound, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, CMU) and the BBC Radio 1 (Jack Saunders, Gemma Bradley, Jess Iszatt, Mollie King, Sian Eleri - ‘Next Wave’ interview) and BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq - Maida Vale session, Chris Hawkins, Deb Grant, Nathan Shepherd, Emily Pilbeam) airwaves as her LP release date arrives.
Firmly capitalising on the buzz around her soaring profile, Ellur’s brutally honest reflection on life in her emerging 20s has brought plenty of fanfare and endorsements from various artists including The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, as well as songwriting sessions and podcasting slots with the likes of Antony Szmierek, Blossoms and Jade Bird. With an album release show in Hebden Bridge tonight (February 6th), followed by an April UK tour and festival dates, the burgeoning musician is certainly primed to reach new heights.
Speaking ahead of her LP release, Ellur revealed: “‘At Home in My Mind’ is everything I wish I could’ve said when I was younger. It is all that I have come to understand about life and myself so far. All the songs touch on feelings and experiences that I only feel safe to explore and revisit in my music. It’s about self understanding and discovery. I’ve taken reference from my indie-pop roots (Sam Fender, Coldplay, The 1975) whilst also exploring my interests in the folk-rock sounds of Big Thief, Ben Howard, Bon Iver and alternative and glitch pop influences such as Radiohead and Dora Jar, Thom Yorke and Bjork. It is naturalistic and human, real and honest. This album is an arm extended out looking for people who need a hand to hold, over the creation process the songs have become about connection. I want people who are here for this to want to be with me for the long run.”
