BUTCHIE - “STARS” - MOREMEN

BUTCHIE, the project of artist, poet, designer, and educator Matthew Waldman, is proud to announce the release of "STARS, " a deeply personal reimagining of the 1979 Sylvester classic.

While the original track reverberated through gay clubs well into the 1980s, Butchie’s version is a sonic transformation, shifting the song into a "space journey under the mirrorball." Eschewing the attempt to chase Sylvester’s iconic, soaring falsetto, Butchie leans into a low, relaxed register to underscore the track's core, transformative message: “Everybody is a star, everybody is one, you are a star, and you only happen once.” Musically, the track carves out a new space for the song, blending elements of hyperpop, trance, electroclash, and indie dance.

"STARS" arrives as a singular artistic statement, distinct from Waldman's recent work on the album EVERPRESENCE. EVERPRESENCE documents a life lived at the fault-line between metamorphosis and global crisis. The album is framed as a post-modern cosmology, folding intimate psychic impressions—gaslighting, unrequited desire, and coming-of-age—into larger systems like anti-science culture and climate chaos, insisting on presence and connection in a world that is in flux yet "everpresent."

ABOUT BUTCHIE:

New York–born, Tokyo-based artist and designer Matthew Waldman records as Butchie, a project that sets husky, narrative vocals against dream-pop and synth-led electronics. Founder of cult design brand NOOKA and professor at Keio University’s Graduate School of Media Design, Waldman draws on decades of writing as a fluxus artist living in liminal cultural spaces and acts as a global designer bringing those stories into focus for his Butchie releases. Production, arrangements and all instruments on STARS and EVERPRESENCE are by Peter Cattermoul.
