BDRMM - MICROTONIC - ROCK ACTION
Genre-splicing Hull four-piece bdrmm today release their hotly anticipated third album “Microtonic”, out on Mogwai’s Rock Action Records and available on digital, CD, classic black LP and on indie stories exclusive coloured LP.
Recorded at The Nave Studios in Leeds with long-term band collaborator Alex Greaves, the album also features guest appearances from Sydney Minsky Sargeant of Working Men's Club and Olivesque of Nightbus. The result is 10 tracks from a band not only subverting their sound, but who are unafraid to bite back, and confidently embracing a fuller, more expansive spectrum of tones and atmospheres.
The album follows hot on the heels of well-received singles “John On The Ceiling”, “Infinity Peaking” and the most recent blistering electronica of “Lake Disappointment”, with all three setting the precedent for the new record as whole.
While bdrmm’s trademark sound hasn’t disappeared by any means, being asked to support Daniel Avery along with a trip to Field Day for a group rave were both instrumental moments in the band deciding to incorporate more dance music elements into a sound that had already been moving steadily towards across recent releases.
Guitarist and vocalist Ryan Smith says,
“I felt very constrained writing a certain type of music to fit the genre [we were known for] but something lifted and I felt more free to create what I want. And what I seem to be doing at the moment is a lot of electronic music – taking influence from different spans of electronica, from dance music to ambient and more experimental sources.”
