Today, Los Angeles based band, Kills Birds (Nina Ljeti, Jacob Loeb, Fielder Thomas, and Griffin Kisner) unleash an exciting new chapter with the release, via Lucky Number, of ferocious new EP “Crave”.
Produced by Aron Kobayashi Ritch (Momma) this cathartic EP is their first new music since the band’s 2021 sophomore album “Married”, and their debut for Lucky Number.
Fronted by Nina Ljeti, a Bosnian Canadian filmmaker the Los Angeles Times called “L.A.'s most electrifying new rock singer,” Kills Birds’ renowned performances are truly visceral, with guitarist Jacob Loeb’s blistering riffs and Fielder Thomas’ pummeling basslines now rounded out with the addition of new fourth member, drummer Griffin Kisner. While 2019’s self-titled debut captured the promise of their grunge-inspired sound and Ljeti’s unflinching lyrics, sophomore 2021 release “Married” signaled a notable step up with the band recording at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 with legendary producer Yves Rothman. Following the album’s release Kills Birds toured with Foo Fighters, Sleigh Bells, Shame and Viagra Boys. Now back with renewed vigour and an even more explosive sound Nina Ljeti says of the EP:
“Crave was written during a transitional, introspective period for the band—a brief moment of calm bookended between two destabilizing and defining losses. Musically, the record reaches beyond the post-punk and grunge influences that shaped our earlier work, incorporating elements of dance, industrial rock, and nu-metal, while maintaining a steady progression toward more melody-driven songwriting. Loops, samples, synths, and drum machines were incorporated to evoke a sense of nostalgia, while detuned guitars and dynamic, nuanced drumming keep the songs unpredictable and raw. Lyrically, Crave explores themes of loneliness, identity, and loss, wrapped in a comforting glow of nostalgia. Unlike our previous releases, Crave was developed slowly and painstakingly. Each song went through multiple revisions before settling into its final form. This period of creation was marked by personal change and growth for us, including the addition of Griffin to the band. His drumming and production instincts brought a fresh perspective and helped uncover new dimensions in our writing process. While making it, the record felt hazy, fragmented, and elusive, but as time passes, its meaning becomes clearer, resonating in ways we couldn’t have predicted”.
